  • Excellent Work! Highly Recommend Shizen Landscaping! We are extremely happy with the work Ryan and his team at Shizen Landscaping did for our home last week. They are truly the best landscaping contractors we have ever worked with! For years, the area under a large oak tree in our front yard had been a constant headache because of endless weeds. We tried everything, including mulch, creeping phlox, flowers, and bushes, but nothing solved the problem. Ryan came up with a great plan. His team removed the weeds, bushes, flowers, and old mulch, added fresh topsoil, and seeded the area with grass. They also installed edging around our white decorative stones and cleaned up another front garden with fresh mulch. What impressed us most was their hard work and attention to detail. They even washed our white stones until they looked beautifully clean and rinsed the dirt off the street. Ryan personally worked alongside his crew and carefully checked the quality of the work. We have hired other landscaping companies before, but none has provided this level of service and attention to detail. Ryan is kind, professional, and dedicated, and his team takes real pride in their work. We couldn’t be happier with the results! We highly recommend Shizen Landscaping and will definitely hire Ryan and his team again for our next project. Thank you, Ryan, and your crew, for such wonderful work!

Garden Design and Install Done Right in Hillsborough
Hillsborough Township, NJ

Garden Design and Install Done Right in Hillsborough

This Hillsborough property had good bones - existing stonework, mature trees, and a layout with real potential. What it needed was the right plants to tie everything together and give the landscape some structure and lasting color. We came in with a full garden design and install plan. That meant selecting trees and shrubs that would work with what was already there - not fight it. You can see the mix we chose: Japanese maples for deep burgundy color, low-spreading junipers for ground-level texture, barberry for a pop of red, and upright evergreens to add height and year-round interest. Every plant had a purpose. Tree placement was a big part of this one. Getting the right species in the right spot matters more than most people realize. A tree that's poorly placed will either underperform or cause problems down the road. We staked and positioned each one carefully before a single hole was dug. The beds were finished with a clean layer of fresh mulch throughout, which does more than just look sharp - it holds moisture, regulates soil temperature, and cuts down on weed pressure. Small details like that add up over time and make a real difference in how well the plants establish. What we ended up with is a front yard that has color, structure, and variety across all four seasons. The plants we chose will continue to fill in and mature, which means this landscape only gets better with time.

How Natural Stone Makes Your Landscape Look Finished
Clinton, NJ

How Natural Stone Makes Your Landscape Look Finished

A lot of yards look decent from the street but still feel like something is missing. That "unfinished" feeling usually comes down to one thing - there's no intentional material tying the space together. That's where natural stone comes in, and it's one of our favorite things to work with. We use different types of stone for different purposes, and getting that match right matters. Smooth river stone and beach pebble work great as borders along walkways and planting beds - they frame the space without competing with the plants. Smaller crushed stone and gravel are go-to options along foundation lines and around AC units where you want clean drainage and low maintenance. And larger decorative rock does heavy lifting when you need to define edges, slow water runoff, or just add visual weight to a landscape bed. The best part? Stone isn't just decorative. It solves real problems. Foundation beds that used to collect standing water drain cleanly with the right stone base underneath. Mulch that washed out every season gets replaced with rock that stays put. Beds that required constant weeding become nearly maintenance-free. It does the job while looking good - that's a hard combination to beat. Picking the right stone for your specific property is where we spend a lot of time with homeowners. The size, color, and texture of the stone all affect how the final result looks and performs. A 3-5 inch Delaware river stone is going to give you a completely different feel than small pea gravel, even if they're going in the same general area. We help sort through those decisions so you end up with something you're actually happy with long-term. Whether we're laying a natural stone walkway, bordering a paver driveway with river rock, or filling in a landscape bed as part of a larger installation, stone is almost always part of the conversation. It's one of those materials that works across a huge range of styles and budgets. If your yard is at that "almost there" stage, there's a good chance the right stone is what pulls it all together.

Skip Laurel Privacy Screen Taking Shape at West Amwell Township Farm
West Amwell Township, NJ

Skip Laurel Privacy Screen Taking Shape at West Amwell Township Farm

We've been working on a large skip laurel screen at one of the oldest farms in West Amwell Township, and it's really starting to come together. This is the kind of job that takes patience - you're not just planting shrubs, you're building a living wall that'll look better every single year. Skip laurel is one of our go-to recommendations for property owners who want real privacy without putting up a fence. It's fast-growing, holds its deep green color year-round, and gets dense enough to actually block sightlines. For a historic farm property like this one, it fits the landscape in a way that a wood or vinyl fence never could. What we love about a job like this is watching the progress unfold. The early shots show the plants freshly installed - bare soil, small starts lined up neatly along the split-rail fence. Fast forward and you can see the difference. The plants have filled in, the green wall is forming, and the whole driveway edge looks intentional and polished. The stone cobble edging running the full length of the planting keeps everything sharp and contained. A screen planting at this scale takes planning - proper spacing, consistent planting depth, and good bed prep are what separate a hedge that thrives from one that just survives. We take the time to get those details right from the start, because a hedge is a long-term investment in your property. If you've been thinking about adding privacy, structure, or year-round color to your property, skip laurel is worth a serious look. It works on large acreage like this, but also scales well for residential lots. We're happy to talk through what would work best for your specific situation.

Garden Bed Renovation with Paver Edging in Clinton NJ
Clinton, NJ

Garden Bed Renovation with Paver Edging in Clinton NJ

Most front yards don't need a full overhaul to look sharp. Sometimes it comes down to cleaning up what's already there and giving it a proper frame. That's exactly what this Clinton property needed - overgrown beds, no defined edges, and nothing tying the space together. We started by pulling out the old bushes and clearing the beds down to a clean slate. Fresh mulch went in throughout, and then we installed paver edging around the tree rings and garden beds to give everything a crisp, finished border. The difference that clean edging makes is hard to overstate. It takes a yard from looking neglected to looking intentional - fast. The front yard got a full garden bed renovation with rounded river rock running alongside the bluestone walkway, creating a natural transition between the hardscape and the plantings. We tucked solar ground lights into the rock border and added bollard-style landscape lighting throughout the beds so the space holds up after dark too. The existing shrubs and ferns got shaped up and set back into fresh mulch, and the whole bed reads as one cohesive design now. Out back, we wrapped a blue spruce tree with a paver border and fresh mulch - same idea, same clean result. A separate curved garden bed near the patio got the paver edging treatment as well, with lavender and perennial plants filling it out. Those ground-level solar lights we set into the front beds carry through to the back too, which keeps the look consistent across the whole property. Small details like this - the paver ring around a tree, a defined bed edge, the right lighting - are what separate a yard that looks maintained from one that looks designed. It's not always about adding more. Sometimes it's about finishing what's already there the right way.

Garden Bed Extension and New Plantings in New Hope
New Hope, PA

Garden Bed Extension and New Plantings in New Hope

A lot of backyards with pools and patios have the hardscape covered - the pool looks great, the patio is done, the gazebo is in place. But the landscaping around it? That part often gets left behind. The beds feel too small, the plantings are sparse, and the whole space ends up looking a little unfinished. That's exactly what we were working with here in New Hope. The existing garden bed running alongside the pool had good bones - some established flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, a few shrubs. But the bed itself didn't extend far enough to balance the scale of the space. So we expanded it outward and worked in a fresh round of new plantings to fill it out properly. Echinacea, zinnias, shasta daisies, and a mix of flowering and foliage plants were added to create some depth and variety across the bed. The planting layout matters a lot in a space like this. You want taller, bolder plants toward the back and mid-section, with lower or more delicate varieties filling in the front edge. That layering is what gives a garden bed a finished, intentional look rather than a random collection of plants dropped in the ground. We also cut a clean bed edge and finished everything with fresh black mulch, which helps the colors really pop. From a practical standpoint, extending the bed also helps reduce the amount of open turf that needs to be maintained right up against the pool coping - a nice side benefit for the homeowner. Good garden installation isn't just about looks. It's about making the whole outdoor space work better together. The pool area, the patio, the gazebo - now the planting beds are holding their own alongside all of it. This is the kind of landscape installation work we do a lot of in Bucks County. Whether it's a bed that needs to be extended, a full garden installation from scratch, or just a refresh with new plants and mulch, the goal is always the same - make the space feel complete and cohesive. Small changes in the right spots make a big difference in how a backyard actually feels to spend time in.

Clinton NJ Garden Bed Redesign That Actually Makes Sense
Clinton, NJ

Clinton NJ Garden Bed Redesign That Actually Makes Sense

Here's what we were working with - a front bed that had lost all definition. Weeds had taken over, the soil was tired, and the planting had no real structure to it. The kind of yard that's easy to ignore until it starts pulling down the whole look of the house. We cleared everything out and started fresh. New plants were spaced out with intention - perennials, low-growing shrubs, and flowering plants arranged so each one has room to grow without crowding out its neighbors. That spacing matters a lot more than people realize. It's the difference between a bed that looks good for one season and one that holds up year after year with minimal effort. The granite cobblestone border that runs the full length of the bed does a lot of heavy lifting here. It creates a hard line between the planting area and the paver driveway, keeps the black mulch in place, and gives the whole bed a finished, intentional look. That kind of edge is what separates a landscaped yard from one that just has plants in the ground. The black mulch pulls everything together. It makes the plant colors pop, retains moisture around the root zones, and cuts down on weeding significantly. Combined with the clean border and thoughtful plant selection, this garden installation went from a forgotten corner to one of the strongest features of the property.

Garden Bed Renovation and Shrub Trimming in Flemington NJ
Flemington, NJ

Garden Bed Renovation and Shrub Trimming in Flemington NJ

Here's a job we really enjoyed working on over at Hunterdon Creekside Development in Flemington. The beds around this home's front porch had overgrown shrubs and bare mulch that just weren't doing the property any favors. Nothing was terrible - but nothing was pulling its weight either. That's usually the point where a full renovation makes way more sense than just a quick cleanup. We started with the shrubs. They needed proper shaping - not just a light pass with the trimmers. We use Niwaki hand shears for this kind of detailed shrub work, and there's a good reason for that. Hand tools give you control that power trimmers simply can't match. Each shrub gets shaped individually based on how it's actually growing, not just buzzed down to a uniform blob. The result is tight, rounded forms that look intentional and hold their shape longer between visits. Once the shrubs were cleaned up, we pulled out the old mulch and replaced the beds with fresh stone. Stone is low-maintenance by nature - it doesn't break down, it doesn't need to be refreshed every season, and it gives the beds a clean, finished look year-round. We also added colorful annuals along the side bed near the porch, which brought some life to what was previously a pretty flat, empty strip of ground. The difference between a bed that's been maintained and one that's been renovated is noticeable. Flemington homeowners deal with fast-growing shrubs all season long, and staying ahead of that growth is a lot easier when the beds are set up right from the start. Stone mulch, properly shaped shrubs, and healthy plantings all work together to keep things looking sharp with a lot less effort going forward. This is the kind of work we do regularly across Hunterdon County - shrub trimming, bed renovations, stone installation, and planting. If your beds are starting to look a little rough around the edges, we're happy to take a look and figure out the best path forward.

Gravel Driveway Grading for Flemington Floral in Flemington, NJ
Flemington, NJ

Gravel Driveway Grading for Flemington Floral in Flemington, NJ

Gravel driveways are low-maintenance - until they're not. Over time, the surface shifts, gravel migrates to the edges, and low spots start collecting water. That's exactly what was happening at Flemington Floral in Flemington Borough. The driveway had lost its shape and needed to be properly regraded to get drainage moving in the right direction again. We brought in our Boxer 700HDX compact track loader to do the heavy redistribution work. That machine is ideal for a tight commercial space like this - it's powerful enough to move and grade material efficiently, but compact enough to work close to the building without causing damage. Once the loader did its job, the crew finished things off by hand-raking the surface to get an even, clean grade across the full area. Proper grading isn't just about looks. When a gravel driveway isn't sloped correctly, water pools, gravel washes out faster, and you end up dealing with the same problem every year. Getting the grade right the first time means the surface drains the way it should and holds up a lot longer between maintenance visits. The finished surface sits clean and level right up to the retaining wall, with a consistent spread of gravel across the entire area. No more low spots, no more uneven patches - just a solid, well-drained surface that looks sharp and works the way it should for a busy local business. Commercial properties like Flemington Floral deal with a lot more foot and vehicle traffic than a typical residential driveway, so keeping things functional and presentable matters. Whether it's a full driveway grading job or ongoing maintenance, getting the groundwork right makes a real difference for the day-to-day operation of a property.

Garden Bed Overhaul and Tree Planting in Raritan Township
Raritan Township, NJ

Garden Bed Overhaul and Tree Planting in Raritan Township

Old garden beds have a way of becoming a problem over time. The stone shifts, the ground gets uneven, weeds take over, and the whole thing just starts working against your property instead of for it. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. We stripped it all out - old stone, debris, worn-out material - and got the ground leveled properly before anything else went in. That part matters more than most people realize. If the base isn't right, nothing you plant on top of it is going to drain or grow the way it should. Fresh topsoil went down across the entire bed, which gives new plants and seed a much better starting point than what was there before. Tree planting was part of the scope too. Getting trees properly set at the right depth, with good soil backfilled around the root ball, is what separates a tree that struggles from one that actually establishes and thrives. We take that seriously on every install. Once the trees were in and the soil was worked and raked smooth, the bed was seeded to fill in the open ground. It gives the whole space a clean, finished look right away - and a healthy base to grow from long-term. These are the kinds of details that pay off in how your property looks and how well it holds up over time. A garden bed that's been neglected for a few years isn't a lost cause. More often than not, it just needs a proper reset - and that's something we do a lot of. Clean it out, build it back right, and let it grow.

Old Shrubs Out, Clean Stone Garden Bed In
Clinton, NJ

Old Shrubs Out, Clean Stone Garden Bed In

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a front yard is start fresh. This homeowner had overgrown, tired shrubs crowding the entrance - the kind that needed constant attention and never really looked clean no matter how much trimming you threw at them. The decision was easy: pull everything out and build something that actually works long-term. We started by removing the existing shrubs and clearing the beds down to bare soil. From there, we laid weed barrier fabric across the entire area before bringing in the decorative stone. That step matters a lot - skip it and you're pulling weeds through gravel for years. The fabric underneath is what keeps a stone bed looking sharp season after season with minimal effort. The deep reddish-brown crushed stone we used ties in nicely with the natural stone on the home's exterior. It's not a coincidence - that kind of material selection is part of what makes a landscape installation feel intentional rather than thrown together. A few ornamental grass plantings were kept and spaced out through the bed to add texture without adding maintenance headaches. What you end up with is a front entrance that looks polished and structured. No more shrubs swallowing the walkway. No more mulch breaking down every season. Just clean lines, good contrast, and a bed that holds its look without demanding a lot from you. This is exactly the kind of work we do when a yard needs more than just a trim. Between the shrub removal, the weed barrier install, and the full landscape installation with decorative stone, this one came together into something the homeowner can actually enjoy without worrying about it every few weeks.
